DAPHNE, Alabama — The Lady Trojans pulled off a 25-22, 25-19, 25-16 senior-night sweep of the visiting Lady Lions of Foley Thursday at Daphne. The league win secured second place for the Trojans while the Lions finished third in the 6A Area 3 standings.

Daphne was led by Katherine Barr who had nine kills and 15 digs; Taylor Wright with seven kills, three blocks and three service aces; Taylor Barnette's five kills and 13 assists; Suzanne Evans’ six kills and Taylor Pitt's three kills while Jordan Filotei added 18 digs, two aces; Anna Ramsey added 17 digs, two aces; Tristan Campbell added 15 digs and Audrey Walding posted eight assists and thee digs.

Foley’s Natasha Johnson led the Lions with 10 kills and 14 digs, Kelsey Cassebaum added six kills, Amanda Brett picked up six digs, Karely Alexander scored eight digs, Hilton Foster posted 11 assists, Ashley Brokenshaw contributed eight assists and Emily Robertson nailed three aces from the service line.

“Clinching second tonight was big for us," Daphne coach Edoli Herrion said. “And we were just determined to end this regular season and this last game at home for five seniors with a win. And I’m proud of how we played and we showed ourselves that we can play and win. We just have to stay motivated and carry this momentum to the area tournament.”

The 2012 6A Area 3 playoffs get going this week with the area tournament Thursday at Robertsdale.

The Lady Golden Bears clinched the No. 1 seed earlier this season while until last week Baldwin County, Daphne, and Foley had mathematical claims to the runner-up spot pending the final week of regular-season play. Foley's defeat of BCHS last week and loss to DHS Thursday puts them in third, the Lady Tigers are the fourth seed and Fairhope fifth.

“It’s good to be third at this point,” said Foley head coach Wing Brett. “The way Robertsdale is playing right now, I think it’s going to be tough to get by them. So, by being second or third to start the tournament I think we give ourselves a chance to make it to the finals and then a post season. Which Foley volleyball has not had in a long time.”

The Lady Pirates and Lady Tigers will battle first Thursday afternoon with only the winner surviving to face No. 1 seed RHS. Daphne and Foley will also play a first-round match Thursday. The winners will continue to the final rounds Friday with the top two teams advancing to the South Super Regionals set for Oct. 26-27 in Montgomery.
