DAPHNE, Ala. — The Lady Trojans built a 7-0 halftime lead and added three more unanswered after the break to produce a 10-0 region victory over Baldwin County High early.
The 6A Region 2 win improved the Daphne girls to 12-3-1 overall and 5-1 in region play.
Brianna Heiss scored a hat trick, Alma Avalos and Emily Baggett had two goals each, Lexi Elgin and Rianna Gurvitz had one each and Meghan Fogelsong added a PK.
Freshman keeper Cassie Schmitt earned the shutout in goal for Daphne.
The Lady Trojans host Davidson’s Lady Warriors Saturday with varsity kickoff set for 5 p.m.
DHS head coach Rick Andrew said both boys and girls squads are playing well, but still have very good teams to face.
“Our ball movement is a lot better lately,” he said. “These are games you hope to get out of without serious injury. Baldwin County came out and did a good job of keeping the ball away from us early. Then we started playing like a team, like we're capable. And I told the guys, I said, we have to play like this, our best, all the the time if we hope to play at the top level.
“The girls are playing well, too, right now. Games like this are kind of scary because they don’t really tell you a lot and you don't want to let your guard down for the next one. But the Baldwin County girls played hard as did the boys and we have to just be able to adjust to whatever kind of competition we face.”
Facing non-region opponent Davidson on Saturday may give Daphne a taste of post-season play since the Warriors (especially the boys) are usually near the top of the region rankings.
“Davidson always has a variety of ways to beat you, so we have to be on our best for them,” Andrew said. “Not sure about their girls this year, but of course we have to worry about our own region first.”
