DAPHNE, Ala.—Jubilee Sounds, the audition-only choir at Daphne High School, has been recognized for superior scores at a recent assessment and will perform at a statewide competition in the end of April.
Last week, the group—comprising 22 students—scored all 5s, the highest mark possible, for its showing at the District 7 Performance Assessment. Alabama is divided into seven districts, with Baldwin County joining Mobile County in District 7. During the assessment, choir teams were judged on tone, intonation, diction, musical effect and balance of the parts.
Choral director Donna Toler cites the students’ hard work and dedication as reasons for the group’s success. “And talent,” she said. “These are a lot of talented kids.”
Daphne High’s Ladies’ Choir, open to any female student interested in singing, also performed at last week’s competition and received satisfactory remarks.
The Jubilee choir is not limited to performing at competitions and assessments.
“(Jubilee Sounds) performs for a variety of things,” Toler said. “They sang the national anthem at football games; they’re the choral outreach at Daphne High.”
The choir performs an array of musical selections, ranging in styles from classical to pop and Broadway.
“One of the pieces they did is a Spanish classical piece. This spring, we’ll do a Broadway revue,” Toler said.
Toler this weekend has taken four of her singing students—seniors Allen Barber and Daniel Murphy, junior Morgyn Nabors and freshman Melanie Henderson—to Birmingham’s All-State Choral Festival, where they can gain valuable singing and competition experience.
