Daphne High School student faces expulsion hearing after being arrested for ‘terrorist threat,’ school spokesperson says

DAPHNE, Ala.—A Daphne High School student was arrested after making threats on Friday after being punished for a separate matter, a Baldwin County Schools spokesperson said.

A teacher referred the male student to the office for a uniform infraction, according to Terry Wilhite, Baldwin County Public Schools communications director, who said the teacher heard the student mumble something offensive on his way out of the classroom. The comments made were considered threatening, Wilhite said.

The school administration called the school’s resource officer in to deal with the situation; the officer took the student to the police station. The student will be suspended from school and faces an expulsion hearing.

The school was never in any real danger, according to Wilhite so the school was never put into lockdown.

The school system follows federal guidelines when any perceived threat occurs. According to Wilhite, the law has become stricter since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, which is why the student was arrested.

Wilhite said students must realize under federal law “every comment counts — even extemporaneous ones.”
