DAPHNE, Ala. — Highlights from Daphne High School are as follows.

*Daphne High School just announced it will host it’s first “Battle Of The Bands” Contest on Dec. 2.

The winning band will be given the opportunity to perform a couple of songs at this year’s DHS Prom.

Any money raised during this event will be donated to the 2010 Prom fund. Please see Mrs. Dabney or Assistant Principal Mrs. Horton for additional details.

*Last week’s Parthenon speakers were Cathy Kaufman from WABB radio station, Daphne City Council member Ron Scott, University Of South Alabama Baseball Coach Steve Kittrell and Barry Swope from Focal Point Professional Services in Daphne. Kaufman is the marketing and public relations director for WABB. She spoke to the Job Success students about employment opportunities within the radio industry and she even passed out some radio station “freebies” for the students in attendance. Scott talked to the Circuit Speaker students about city government as well as voting requirements and what personal requirements it takes for someone to run for public office. Kittrell spoke to the Team Building Class about being a student scholar and student athlete. He also talked to them about what it takes to be a member of a collegiate team. Finally, Swope spoke with the Teen Touch students about having healthy relationships and the difficulty of fitting in. Swope is a counselor at Focal Point Professional Services, a Daphne-based counseling service.

Next week’s featured speakers will be a specialist on homeland security, an Olympic medalist, Tracie Byrne from the South Alabama Hospital and Nicole Keshick, head coach of the University Of South Alabama Volley Ball Team. Keshick will bring a student athlete from the volleyball team with her. All speakers and guests are volunteers who speak during the school’s Parthenon time each Wednesday morning

*Last week’s Daphne High School Artist Of The Week is artist Kayla Olson. Olson is a DHS 11th-grader and is a student in a DHS Visual Arts class Art I. Olson’s week-winning project will be on view through today in the DHS library, just as you walk into the doors on the left.
