Sophomore Rachel Lane scored at the 17:57 mark in the second half and added a goal on a penalty kick with 2:14 to play to push Daphne (2-5, 1-1) to the win. Daphne head coach Jim Fawcett credited Lane’s play, as well as the play of the rest of the team, with the win.
“She was great last year as a ninth grader on varsity, this year she’s up there as a tenth grader. She had great support from our midfield,” Daphne head coach Jim Fawcett said. “Rachel Collins, a 14-year-old player, has been great every single game. She played lights out at center and mid field. Mackensie Terry on the defense, she’s a freshman, and I have no better player on my team. It was really a whole team effort.”
Keeper Rachel Rapier had two saves and recorded the shutout for the Lady Trojans.
The Lady Trojans have no seniors and only one junior on varsity this season. Fawcett said he was glad to see his young team persevere until the end against Foley (1-3-1, 0-2).
“That is a very young squad and they went out there and stuck with it,” he said. “They deserved this win. We are a lot better team than our record shows, and they proved that tonight against a Foley team that is very good.”
Both teams will be back in action next Friday as Daphne visits Robertsdale and Foley visits Fairhope.
