DAPHNE, Alabama - Amber Yelding went 6-for-6 at the foul line in the final minute to seal a 45-35 sub-region win over Williamson at Daphne Thursday night.
The senior scored a season-high 30 points to help lead the Lady Trojans to the South West Regional tournament at the Mitchell Center Tuesday. The Trojan girls will take on Davidson at 6 p.m.
Daphne got off to a slow start but maintained a lead after each period against WHS. The Lady Trojans improved to 23-5 winning their 13th straight game.
"I'm so proud of these girls," said first-year head coach Tereance Pinkney. "They have worked so hard and been so dedicated to making this happen. Getting to the Mitchell Center was, has been our focus all year. Now we just have to keep playing sound basketball and do the things that got us to this point. Take care of the ball on offense, limit them to one shot and keep the pressure up on defense. Coach
(Charlie) Shipp always does a good job and will have his team ready. We have to prepare and be at our best. If we play like we are capable of playing, we will put ourselves in a good position against them. We will have to take advantage of everything we can and not give them
much."
The Lady Warriors finished the regular season 22-6 and defeated Blount to advance to the regional. They are ranked No. 6 in the state in 6A.
Against WHS, DHS traded leads in the first quarter to lead 10-9 going into the second, led 23-15 at the half and 35-27 after the third period. The Lions made a run early in the fourth and closed the gap to four
points, but the final five minutes belonged to Daphne which ripped out on a 10-4 run. Kandejah Inge led WHS with 14 points.
The two teams had split during the regular season. "Williamson played hard like we knew they would," Pinkney said. "They are well coached and always play aggressively. They make you earn everything. I feel like playing them made us better and now we'll see how good we really
can be."
