Daphne looking into grant to begin designs on Bayfront Park amphitheater

DAPHNE, Ala.—The Daphne City Council showed general consensus Monday that it would support a grant to design and build an amphitheater at Bayfront Park.

Selena Vaughn of the Village Point Park Foundation told the council the foundation is interested in applying for a $40,000 grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts to hire an architect to design the amphitheater in hopes the structure would be built soon after.

“Having a design would then allow the city to begin the process of getting true construction costs and lining up the finances to pay for the completion,” Vaughn said.

“There’s nothing better on a beautiful spring day than an amphitheater,” Councilman Ron Scott said.

“I’m in favor of this wholeheartedly. It sounds very positive,” Councilman John Lake said.

Vaughn said the city would match the grant to pay for the design fees, which she said would be around $87,500. Therefore, the city would pay around $43,750 and the grant would be for the same price.

Vaughn also said her estimated guess is the amphitheater would hold around 2,200 people, and the construction cost of the amphitheater would come form the lodging tax revenue reserved for Bayfront parks.
