DAPHNE, Ala. — A man who has confessed to killing his roommate this past weekend will stay in jail until his next court appearance, the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office reported.
Shaun Carmadelle, 32, who faces capital murder charges in the strangulation death of Steven McCullough, 43, learned he was denied bail during a bond hearing today, a representative for the district attorney’s office said.
District court judge Jody Bishop denied Carmadelle’s request to be let out of jail on bond. The hearing was held via teleconference between the Foley Satellite Courthouse and a courtroom in the Baldwin County Correctional Center.
Carmadelle will be held at the Baldwin County Correctional Center until his next court appearance, which is not scheduled yet. Carmadelle’s appointed defense attorneys have 14 days in which to request a preliminary hearing.
Carmadelle told investigators he strangled McCullough with two electric cords during a fight Saturday morning, Daphne police said.
Preliminary autopsy reports indicate strangulation and medical examiners ruled McCullough’s death a homicide.
The Daphne Police Department brought the suspect into custody with assistance from the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, the FBI, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and the Alabama Department of Forensic Science.
On Monday, Daphne police officers arrested Carmadelle on an unrelated charge and later identified him as a person of interest in connection with the weekend homicide investigation.
Police on Sunday found McCullough dead in his unit at Grande Pointe Apartments. Police were called to the scene for a welfare concern.
Investigators said they believe Carmadelle was the last person to see the victim alive and said he was in possession of the victim’s vehicle after his death. The vehicle has been recovered and the FBI is assisting in processing the vehicle.
