Daphne planner criticizes ‘hideously’ structured 90-foot pylon sign

DAPHNE, Ala. — The Daphne Planning Commission voted 4-3 in favor of allowing L.A. Daphne L.L.C. to build a 90-foot pylon sign near the west entrance of Jubilee Square.

Commissioners Bo White, Ed Kirby, Joe Lemoine and Don Terry voted in favor of the sign, while commissioners Cathy Barnette, Larry Chason and Victoria Phelps voted against it.

The sign will sit around 200 feet west of Starbuck’s Coffee near Exit 35B along Interstate 10, and it will be around 880 square feet. L.A. Daphne will manage the sign and determine which businesses are advertised on it.

Those against the structure said they’d prefer a sign a little smaller than 90 feet.

“I can’t see the compelling need for a 90-foot sign,” Barnette said.

‘I’m in favor of the sign, but not at 90 feet,” Phelps said. “I think 70 feet is just as effective.”

Phillip McAfee, representing L.A. Daphne, said the sign needed to be 90 feet tall because then the businesses advertised near the bottom of the sign could still be seen by drivers passing along I-10; anything lower could be less clear.

“If we had a problem with 90 feet, we should’ve put that in the overlay district requirements,” Lemoine said. “I have no problem with the 90-foot sign.”

Barnette, Lemoine and Phelps thought 60 to 80 feet would suit necessity, and Barnette said, “When we passed those requirements, 90 feet was the maximum.”

Barnette and Phelps also said the look of the sign does not coincide with the rest of the mall’s development.

“The sign doesn’t really match the character of the development,” Barnette said, noting she’d rather bricked columns that don’t “stand out so hideously.”

McAfee said he thought the look of the sign is good for its size, and the landscaping at the bottom is a nice touch.

Barnette said she agreed about the landscaping being nice, but said overall she thinks the sign will “look goofy.”
