Daphne Planning Commission accepts request to build 90-foot Jubilee Square pylon sign; some planners upset about height

DAPHNE, Ala.—The Daphne Planning Commission voted 4-3 in favor of allowing L.A. Daphne L.L.C. to build a 90-foot pylon sign near the west entrance to Jubilee Square.

Commissioners Bo White, Ed Kirby, Joe Lemoine and Don Terry voted in favor of the sign, while commissioners Cathy Barnette, Larry Chason and Victoria Phelps voted against it.

The sign will sit around 200 feet west of Starbuck’s Coffee near Exit 35B along Interstate 10, and it will be around 880 square feet. L.A. Daphne will manage the sign and which businesses are advertised on the sign.

Those against it said they’d rather the sign be a little smaller than 90 feet.

“I can’t see the compelling need for a 90-foot sign,” Barnette said.
