Daphne Police Department will collect unused prescription drugs to cut down on pill abuse and theft

DAPHNE, Ala.— The police department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will take all unwanted prescription drugs from residents on April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the police department’s location at 1502 U.S. Highway 98.

Two common ways to dispose of prescription drugs — flushing them and throwing them in the trash — could cause dangerous situations, the police department said.

According to a news release, the department is participating in the event to help residents rid their homes of potentially dangerous drugs, whether they are expired, unused or simply unwanted. The longer prescription drugs remain in a home, the more likely it is the drugs will be misused, or shared with a friend or family member.

The police department will take the drugs and properly dispose of them free of charge, no questions asked.

The Daphne Police Department participated in a nationwide initiative last September, which took 242,000 pounds of drugs off the streets.
