DAPHNE, Ala.—The Daphne Public Library changed the monthly Craft Exchange meeting time to 1 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month beginning in November.
Local miniaturist Ellen Ferruolo will hold a miniatures-making workshop in the Daphne Public Library Community Room on Thursday. Ferruolo has many years of experience working with miniature items.
“She is going to introduce people into the world of making miniatures,” Library Director Tonja Young said. “Everybody will be provided materials to make their own miniatures. I don’t know what the projects are, but everyone will have something to take home.”
She is a member of several local hobby groups, and she coordinated the group that created the two-story furnished dollhouse raffled at last year’s “Fall into Reading” Festival. The dollhouse comprised bookshelves full of books and artistic items, teapots, wall hangings and photographs. Flowers, pumpkins, a wheel barrel and other miniature items were outside the house and in the yard.
“There will be a couple of ladies putting on a demonstration of working with clay,” Ferruolo said. “We’re just doing the basics right now.”
Ferruolo said she plans to have attendees work on a wooden cupboard, which is easy for beginners. She also said the demonstrators will tell the attendees what tools they need and any websites that could help.
Ferruolo has built miniature scenes inside of cookie jars, boxes, complete dollhouses, single dollhouse rooms, hat racks and cabinets.
Admission to the event is free, and everyone will begin his or her own miniature project, the library stated.
“I’ve got free catalogs in case people are interested in continuing with the hobby, so they will have a free catalog and their projects,” Young said.
If enough interest exists following this meeting, the library may hold regular meetings for working on miniatures.
