DAPHNE, Ala.—Thursday was a night fit for a Trojan.
For the first time since 2001, the Daphne High School Trojans brought home the state football championship.
The team, cheerleaders and band celebrated Thursday night and made the trek from City Hall to the Civic Center in the “Parade of Champions.”
Residents and students alike watched along Main Street as beads and cups were thrown in jubilation for the Jubilee City’s accomplishment.
“We’re here to support our older children …,” Daphne Middle School teacher Claire Waites said.
“They’re a good group of kids,” DMS Assistant Principal Jeanne Fox said. “We’re proud of them.”
Others were just happy to be able to watch the championship game on television. The Trojans defeated Hoover 7-6 on Dec. 3.
“We watched it here,” Daphne resident J.R. Ebbitt said, standing outside Manci’s Antique Club. “It’s amazing that Daphne and Spanish Fort both won.”
Other parade watchers comprised Daphne students, and upon sight by the players in one float, DHS student Robert Akins was bombarded with beads.
“They killed me with beads,” he said after spending a few seconds defending himself from the onslaught.
Earlier in the day, DHS held a school assembly to honor the team and fans with the official plaque.
