Daphne, Robertsdale advance to sub-state

MOBILE, Ala. – Daphne's Lady Trojans and Robertsdale's Lady Bears both survived the 6A Region A elimination round hosted by Baker Saturday morning and moved on to the semifinal seeding rounds Saturday afternoon.

Daphne finished third and RHS fourth behind No. 1 seed McGill-Toolen Catholic and runner-up Baker. All four will advance to the sub-state level.

McGill-Toolen and Baker will host the next round while DHS and RHS must travel. RHS will play the No. 1 seed and DHS the No. 2 seed of the Region B tournament.

At Baker Saturday, the Lady Bears defeated Murphy 25-20, 25-18, 25-10, but fell to Baker in the semi-final match 21-25, 25-19, 22-25, 17-25.

The Lady Trojans opened with a win over Davidson 25-14, 25-14, 25-21 but fell to the Dirty Dozen of McGill-Toolen 19-25, 11-25, 15-25.

Daphne and Robertsdale then met in the third-place match with DHS coming out on top of a tight three-set match 25-23, 25-22, 25-21.

Teams that win at the sweet-16 substate level advance to the elite eight state tournament at Pelham. Both DHS and RHS made it in 2008. Daphne was the only 6A team from Baldwin County to advance last year falling to eventual state champion Huntsville.

Daphne coach Edoli Herrion, who played at DHS for Cathy Chason and assisted DHS coach Kay Flarity in 2008 is pleased with the progress the Lady Trojans have been making since the latter part of the regular season.

"We are depending on each other and talking more. Playing defense and getting good passes more consistently and when you do that, you get kills. And we're just playing well when we have to. We could always do better, but we're going to keep going. We are not where we want to be yet."

RHS coach Metta Roberts, who coached against the first-year DHS coach when Herrion was a player at Daphne, is impressed with the Trojans' improvement since the start of the season when RHS defeated DHS twice in region play and once in tournament play. "Daphne has come a long way, won't take anything away from them. They played well. But we didn't have the intensity we should, so you have to take your hat off to them. We had leads and couldn't hold on. We played well against Murphy. But, I don't think we did our best against Baker or Daphne."

Roberts liked the chances of her team and Herrion's team making the trip to state.

"I like our chances," she said. "There's some good teams in Region B, but I think if we focus and play like we are capable of playing we should do OK. Same for Daphne. If they keep playing like they have been, they'll go."

DHS defeated RHS last week for the first time to win the 6A Area 3 title.

For RHS, Bailey Cincotta had 44 digs, Shelia Dailey had 37 kills and Kellen Shirley had 95 assists. For DHS, Cherilyn Ramsey had 39 kills, nine blocks, four aces and 23 digs; Deanna Vogler had 27 kills, 10 blocks, five aces and 34 digs; Krista Owens had 78 digs and an ace; Kayla Owens had 74 assists, six aces, three kills and 21 digs.
