THEODORE – The Daphne Trojans stunned tenth-ranked Theodore 41-13 in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs on Friday.
Daphne (5-6) is only the second team to beat Theodore (9-2) this season. The Bobcats fell to eventual 6A Region 1 champ Davidson in an overtime game earlier this season.
Daphne scored on its first play from scrimmage against Theodore when quarterback Russ Mosley hit Justin Jackson for a 20yard score, set up by a Cameron Peterson interception.
The Trojane led 7-0 at the half.
After Theodore scored on a Todd Neal run in the third quarter, T.J. Yeldon returned the following kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown,
Neal tied the game with another touchdown run, then Daphne broke the game open. Mosley connected with Jackson for a 65 yard score, then Michael Pierce intercepted and returned the ball 43 yards and a touchdown. Yeldon scored on a short run, and Tyrell Holloway capped Daphne’s scoring with a four yard touchdown run.
Daphne will play at rival Fairhope on Friday in a second round playoff game. Fairhope defeated Daphne earlier this season in a 6A Region 2 game.
