DAPHNE—The state high school baseball playoffs got under way last weekend at Daphne with the Trojans moving on and the Foley Lions not.
DHS held off a five-run Foley seventh to win game one 8-5, then eliminated the Lions from the post season 7-1 to sweep the best two-of-three first-round 6A series.
"We don't put a beating on our opponents but we usually do whatever it takes to win a game," said DHS coach Joe Hutchins. "We have been in battles and several one run games which shows the toughness of our boys."
The Trojans established an early lead behind starter Conner Reese (7-3) who also doubled twice and drove in two runs himself. Reese held the 8-0 lead, but struggled in the seventh and was relieved by Russ Mosley. The Foley rally included hits by Dylan Summerville, Justin Anderson, Zach Hughes and a two-RBI double by Taylor Wheaton. Matt Salter and Brandon Sellars also drove in a run each and scored.
For Daphne, Jake Maske and Mason Hutchins each scored two, Reese, Mosley, Brandon Peterson and Jared Olson each added a run.
In game two, DHS built a five-run first-inning lead for Maske off a two RBI double by Tyler Powell and an RBI triple by Mosley. Anderson went 3-for-3 and drove in the only Foley run.
Maske and Anderson battled the rest of the way, but the Trojans' nine hits to the Lions' four left the final at 7-1 Daphne.
DHS (26-9) will now host Fairhope (30-8) in a round two, best-of-three series starting Friday.
"Fairhope is a solid team coming in riding a high so our job is to slow them down," Hutchins said. The Pirates ripped Baldwin County in their first-round pairing 20-2 and 17-3.
The games at DHS on Lawson Road are set for 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday. If necessary, a third game on Saturday will start at noon.
