ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — The Daphne High School varsity men’s soccer team remain undefeated after beating the Robertsdale Golden Bears 4-1 Friday night at Robertsdale.
It was Daphne’s first region game and sixth game of the season, having played and won the Southern Shoot-out Tournament two weeks ago and beating UMS-Wright 4-2 at Daphne in February.
Friday night’s game against Robertsdale started slowly for the Trojan’s offense due in large part to the defensive play of Robertsdale’s two outstanding seniors Caesar Soto and Levi Scott. The Trojans, who were quick to score in the Southern Shoot-out games as well as the UMS game, did not put together a solid strike in the first half despite dominating the ball offensively. It was at the 30:44 minute that Daphne scored the first goal of the game on a brilliant throw-in towards the goal from Senior Hails Seawell. Junior mid-fielder James Crossiant headed the ball into goal. Thanks to the Seawell – Crossiant combination, the half ended with Daphne leading 1-0.
Daphne Coach Rick Andrew gave his players a stern talking to at half time and his efforts were quickly rewarded. Less than ten minutes into the second half center back Dalton Pierce took the ball from the air and served it forward to a waiting Austin Fiddler. Striker Fiddler dribbled through some Golden Bear traffic and put the ball into the net. Daphne led 2-0 at the 36:30 mark of the game. Less than ten minutes later, Daphne scored again on a perfectly placed corner kick from sophomore mid-fielder Josh Gurvitz. James Crossiant scored his second goal of the game taking the Gurvitz corner from the ground and putting it into the middle of the goal. At 25:35 Daphne was ahead 3-0. Robertsdale, feeling the heat of Daphne’s second half comeback, could not keep up the pace and gave up at least seven legitimate shots on goal in the second half. With less than ten minutes left in the match, Coach Andrew put Sophomore Tyler Cox into the game at left mid. His impact was immediately felt when he passed the ball to Hails Seawell who received the ball down the left line, dribbled through two Robertsdale defenders and scored with 9:04 left in the game. Seawell’s goal put the Trojans comfortably up 4-0. With 2:16 left, and the match well in hand, Coach Andrew substituted Sophomore goalie Will Carpenter, giving him a well deserved rest. Carpenter registered six saves while in goal for the Trojans. The lone Robertsdale goal came with 1:11 to go when Casey Overby scored for the Golden Bears. The game ended 4-1 and was a solid win for the Trojans. Assists on Goal for the Trojans came from Croissant, Sophomore Levi Ehmka, Seawell and Gurvitz. The Trojan defense, led by Pierce, Senior Josh Hester, Junior Javier Hernandez, Junior Brandon Roberts and Junior Jacob Olmsted have been rock solid during this young 2011 season. They have held opponents to five goals through six games.
