CLASS 6A BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP: CULLMAN 2, DAPHNE 1 (OT)

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.— Cullman High School captured the school’s first state boys’ soccer championship since 2002 Saturday morning with an exciting 2-1 Class 6A finals victory over Daphne in two overtimes. The Bearcats (24-4-2) scored the winning goal with 53 seconds left in the overtime period – at 84:07 of the contest.

The 2016 championships held at Huntsville’s John Hunt Soccer Complex, marked the 25th year of the AHSAA State Soccer Championships, which began in 1991.

Class 6A championship MVP Miguel Tizapa-Robles scored the winning goal. The sophomore also assisted senior midfielder Guilherme Albuquerque’s goal in the first half that gave Coach Casey Harbin’s team a 1-0 lead at intermission. Daphne (16-6-5), coached by Cameron Williams, tied the match early in the second half on Jackson Barber’s goal at 46:15. The contest remained tied until Tizapa-Robles’ winning goal 38 minutes later.

SEMIFINALS: DAPHNE 1, NORTHRIDGE 0

Senior midfielder Henok Lee slipped a goal past Northridge just 15:43 into the semifinals and Daphne (16-5-5) made that goal stand as the Trojans advanced to the Class 6A boys’ state soccer finals with the 1-0 win.

Daphne keeper Harrison Comerford had three saves, and Jackson Bowers of Northridge had one save for the Jaguars.

CULLMAN 2, PELHAM 0

Cullman High School scored once in each half to defeat Pelham 2-0 Friday and clinched a berth in the Class 6A boys’ finals of 2016 AHSAA State Soccer Championships.

Ben Walker scored the first goal at 29:15 in the first half. Fellow senior Guilherme Albuquerque notched the final goal at 74:19 in the match to close out the scoring.  Kip Potter, the Bearcats’ goalkeeper, had one save as the Cullman defense allowed just three Pelham shot attempts.
