DAPHNE, Ala. — The Daphne City Council on Monday unanimously approved a bid award to Ladas Construction to build a Daphne Fire Department training facility at the corner of Stanton Road and Profit Drive.
The cost of the project under the bid proposed by Ladas Construction is for $629,000.
“It’s a training facility we hope to be able to use on a regional level,” Daphne Fire Chief Bo White said. “We’re also hoping it can double as another fire station in that area.”
White also mentioned at the meeting that the city was not paying anything for the facility; the volunteers will use money they raised to fund the building.
One Daphne resident expressed his concerns with the building of the training facility because of the lack of volunteer firefighters, stating that when he called the department, they said there weren’t more than seven volunteers.
In other news, the council:
•Awarded a bid to Sprint Solutions Inc. for cell phone equipment up to $28,000.
•Accepted Fionn Loop street as part of the Dunmore subdivision.
•Amended ordinance 2010-56 on animal control, stating an issuance fee to get a dog license is $3 if the animal is neutered and $5 if it is not neutered. The original ordinance did not include the fee.
•Decided to add an investment account manager and authorize additional investments. The council listened to a presentation from Scott Hunter of Raymond James & Associates earlier in the meeting.
“You will get more performance on funds through active management,” Hunter said, also stating he has worked with the city of Mobile and that its investments are “performing well.”
•Authorized Mayor Fred Small and Finance Director Kim Briley to work with Gardnyr Michael Capital to move forward with the restructuring and refunding of 2002 warrants.
The next city council meeting will be a finance-based work session at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 29 in City Hall.
