Daphne Trojans bust Blount 40-24

DAPHNE, Ala. – The second-ranked Daphne Trojans took round one of the 6A playoffs by ousting Blount 40-24 at Jubilee Stadium.

Daphne led the Leopards 30-0 at the half, but got a jolt in the second half as BHS exploded for 24 quick points in the fourth quarter.

Daphne coach Glenn Vickery said he may have gotten a little conservative but getting the win is what matters now.

"Sometimes as coaches, we sort of sit on a lead," he said. "Give Blount the credit. I think we all had a good night. When you win, you had a good night."

Daphne (11-0) will now host Foley in the second round at 7 p.m. Friday at Jubilee Stadium.

Vickery said his offensive line and the entire defense played well early.

“The defense got turnovers, and when you score 30 points and shut people out," he said about the first half, "you are doing something right. (Offensive line) Coach (Milton) Sutton had them ready to play. You've got to have some blocking and we did some good things. Things were clicking. We just sort of came out flat (in the second half). You can’t come out flat against a good team, and they showed us that. We got conservative and they played faster. They didn’t quit. They came out, played hard and played better in the second half than we did.”

Torren McGaster's fumble recovery for DHS in the first quarter set up the first DHS scoring drive that went 82 yards to be capped by Israel Lamprakes running it in from the one out of the Wildcat set.

A Zach Houston interception at the DHS 11 set up the next DHS score as Tyrell Holloway burst through for an 89-yard TD sprint.

A 38-yard field goal by Brandon Roberts, a 5-yard run by T.J. Yeldon and a 7-yard TD pass from Russ Mosley to Clark Newsome put the Trojans up by 30 at the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Blount put together an mpressive set of quick-scoring plays. A DHS fumble set the Leopards up at the DHS 21.

BHS quarterback Mike Ward found Wayne Moore for a 10-yard TD pass for a score, Blount went for two successfully then recovered the onside kick and Mike Risper scored on a 14-yard run. Blount converted also that 2-point conversion and the score was 30-16 with 10:26 left in the game.

Daphne's Roderick Tate recovered the second Blount onside try and Daphne settled for another 38-yard field goal from Roberts. Blount fumbled the ensuing kickoff recovered by Leo Batiste for DHS and Mosley connected with a leaping Yeldon on a fade from the 10 for the final DHS TD.

With reserves in, sophomore Josh Johnson picked up about 25 yards on a sweep. But the next play resulted in a fumble that Blount's Ernie Rembert returned 84 yards for a TD with 57 seconds left in the game.

Holloway had 189 yards on 18 carries and Yeldon finished with 84 yards on 12 carries as the Trojans finished with 314 yards on the ground.

The Trojans are 11-0. Blount finished at 5-6.
