IRVINGTON – The Daphne Trojans dominated both sides of the ball Friday as they trounced Alma Bryant 42-11 in a soggy season opener.
Field conditions could not have been much worse, Coach Glenn Vickery said, although the day's heavy rain stopped before warmups and held off for the duration of the game.
"It was a mud pit," Vickery said. "It's a nice field but there was nothing they could do about all the rain."
The mud and moisture did not keep the Trojans from racking up offensive yardage, as they out-gained the Hurricanes 422-188. Daphne spread the ball out on the ground and through the air, giving Junior running back Tyrell Holloway 10 carries for 108 yards and three touchdowns. Junior running back T.J. Yeldon added another touchdown on 11 carries for 67 yards, while Senior wide receiver Israel Lamprakes carried a reverse for 66 yards and a touchdown in the Trojans' opening possession of the third quarter.
The Hurricanes' only points cam in the second quarter, when they scored a touchdown, a two-point conversion and a field goal.
"Our kids came out and played really hard," Vickery said afterwards. "But we have to keep improving. We had some trouble fielding kicks and kicking balls, and there were a few busted assignments in secondary."
The Trojans travel to Bay Minette Friday to play the Tigers of Baldwin County High School, a team that was unable to produce any points in their loss to Theodore last week.
"The Tigers are always a good rival," Vickery said, "and we'll have our hands full. Our goal is to reach the state championship game this year so we can't take any games for granted."
