Daphne Trojans top Theodore 46-38

DAPHNE, Alabama — The Daphne Trojans avenged a season-opening 1-point loss at Theodore with an eight-point, 46-38 win at home Tuesday night. Daphne trailed by a point (18-17) at the half but went on a 19-9 run in the third to pull away.

Theodore had a mini burst late in the fourth in spite of an otherwise effective  stall and press tactic by Daphne outscoring the Trojans 11-10 but it was too little and too belated a comeback by the Bobcats who were held scoreless the last minute and 44 seconds of the game.

“It feels good to get a win over them after we opened the season there with a heart breaker. A last-shot loss at the buzzer,” Daphne head coach Cedric Yelding said. “We played pretty well that night, but we have had time to gel as a team and I think we saw that tonight we are playing much better. We saw how well we can play when we play together and I hope that carries us forward.”

The Trojans go to 7-12 overall and take a 2-2 area record into Foley (10-11, 3-1) Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Trojans will then host Fairhope Tuesday for the final area match-up for both teams at 7:30 p.m.

“I feel good for the kids who have been playing hard and working hard all year, but also struggling sometimes like we do coming up short by a point or two. That can have a negative effect.  Especially on the young guys and that’s about all we have. This is a young bunch and they have come along way since last fall, but I’m proud of how they are handling the ups and downs.”

Daphne staked a 12-10 lead to start the second period but hit only two field goals and 3-of-6 free throws in the second as Theodore edged ahead 18-17 at the half.

Chris Sain finished with 14 points, Devonte Young added 11 and Preston Hughes and Taylor Boyd each had five for the Trojans who shot 16-for-25 at the line.

The Bobcats were led by Darien Parker with eight while Jarrius Hackworth and Javon Hackworth added seven each.
