Daphne urges breast cancer awareness, testing

DAPHNE, Ala. — Daphne Mayor Fred Small at Monday’s city council meeting declared the city would recognize October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. October is celebrated nationally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

A Daphne Fire Department employee gave a presentation on the severity of breast cancer and the helpfulness of mammograms. Mammograms examine the human breast for early detection of breast cancer.

“I urge all women and their families to get the facts on mammograms,” said Jason Brooks, Daphne fire medic, at the meeting.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 68 percent of women at least 40 years old had a mammogram in the past two years.

The National Cancer Institute estimates more than 39,000 females this year have died from breast cancer.

Small and the fire department wore pink T-shirts that support breast cancer awareness.

 The department is selling the shirts at the station, but most shirts are already sold. They still have a few in children’s sizes, though.

In other news, the council:

*Announced that May Day Park would re-open on Friday, and there will be a boat launch grand opening Oct. 24. Recreation Director David McKelroy said the Brown Bag by the Bay concerts would move back to May Day Park once it re-opens. They had been taking place, in the interim, outside City Hall.

*Approved a public hearing date of Nov. 1 to consider revisions to the city’s zoning map.

*Approved a Dec. 4 parade permit for the Arthritis Foundation’s 5K and one mile run.

*Approved a beer and wine license for Publix. The company is building a property along Highway 98 in front of Blockbuster.
