DAPHNE, Alabama —Daphne won the 2012 6A Region 2 championship Friday night at Jubilee Stadium with an impassioned 48-21 decision over visiting Enterprise.
The Trojans scored early and often in the first half to lead 34-7 at the break and improve to 6-3 overall and 6-1 in the final region game of the regular season while the Wildcats dropped their third league match up to finish 6-3, 4-3.
The bonus for Daphne linebacker coach Jacy Todd was the Trojans' first-half shutout of the explosive Enterprise offense.
"The guys did a great job tonight and I'm just proud they did their best," he said. "I know when they do that they have a good shot of shutting down any offense around. It's just so great to be here to see them again and be with them on the sideline. I have missed it and I plan to keep working hard to be able to get back as soon as I can."
Todd was injured in a traffic crash and Life-Flighted to USA Medical Center in Mobile Aug. 1, battled through critical-intensive care on a ventilator for a month, had internal and spinal surgery and then two months of inpatient physical therapy at Shepard Center in Atlanta before being released for the trip back to Daphne for the game. He appeared right at home on the side line in his hand-controlled power chair and wireless head set communicating with the coaches in the press box while encouraging and advising his players.
Daphne head coach Glenn Vickery said the team had an extra win with the return of Todd, a beloved classroom teacher as well as football and golf coach.
"It's been a very special and emotional day for us," Vickery said. "Real excited about the Todd family being with us again. They have been through so much. It's been a very special day for all the Trojans and students and all the fans and teachers and coaches and all the community. But I'm also happy we were able to play at a high level tonight for him because he helped build this team. And you have to play at that level to beat a team like Enterprise and coach (David) Faulkner. His teams always come up with ways to score. But I think with coach Todd here, the kids were motivated. They were on emotional highs all week wanting to do well for him."
But as Todd heads back to Atlanta Saturday to begin an outpatient stretch of therapy, Vickery prepares for admission to UAB Medical Center for a complicated pancreatic surgical procedure (Whipple) that will keep him off the field and off the job for a least a few weeks.
"We were hoping to put it off until after the season, preferably after the championship game," Vickery added with a smile. "But the doctors felt like it needed to be done and so here we go."
Daphne principal, Meredith Foster, said the absence of coach Todd had been hard on everyone, but the additional absence of Vickery who is also the athletic director would be harder.
"We depend on them both so much with athletics being such an integral part of our curriculum and how so many other things revolve and are tied to our sports programs. They are so much more to me and all of us than I can begin to say but they are the very best of what you want leaders and role models for our young people to be.
"It's been tough enough with out coach Todd who is just so much more than a coach or teacher here. He is a beloved part of this institution and community and touched so many, so many lives and I think you see that in all the outpouring of love and support shown for him and his family.
"And now having to do without coach Vick — even for a short while— is just going to make it more challenging but we draw a lot of inspiration from their strength and by working together, we're going to do our best to make them as proud of us as we are of them."
Foster said an interim head coach and possibly a temporary AD would be named Saturday in a press release.
Faulkner, in his first year at EHS, and who worked with Todd at Hoover and later at Foley before he went to Fairhope and Todd came to Daphne said both men were great competitors and friends.
"I was hoping we would make more of a contest for them and give ourselves a chance," he said. "We are progressing some, but Daphne just got control early and we couldn't match it and you can't do a good football team like that. And you know Jacy and coach Vickery are always going to have their guys prepared and they certainly were tonight. But it's so good to see Jacy again and back where I know he loves to be. We will be keeping both him and coach Vickery in our hearts and prayers."
The Trojan offense scored on their first possession on a 25-yard touchdown run by Josh Johnson who added a 27-yard TD in the second quarter. Sophomore running back T.J. Reed had TD runs in each quarter also of 12 and 15 yards. Quarterback T.J. Fleeton threw a TD pass to Jonathan McGaster for a 16-yarder in the first half and McGaster added a rushing TD from the 18 in the second. Ronnie Davis capped the scoring with a 36-yard scoring scamper in the final period. Tyler Cook was 6-for-7 on point-after kicks.
The Wildcats scored in the first half on a strip-and-score by defensive lineman Jabari Thomas who wrestled the ball away from a scrambling Fleeton, dropped it, but scooped it up to rumble 56 yards.
Enterprise QB Clark Quisenberry threw a 12-yard TD pass to Manny Jones, then scored on 3-yard power sneak. Jonathan Stinnett kicked the PATs for the Wildcats who host Jeff Davis High School Nov. 2.
Daphne's longest drive went 99 yards in three plays after an interception by C.J. Bussey and another went 95 yards in three snaps.
The Trojans close out the regular season Friday night on the road in bayou country at Alma Bryant High.
