CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Three Gulf Coast students were among 7,460 May graduates at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Commencement for all graduates is held in the spring.

The students are Mark M. Ogren of Daphne, Rachel Dozier-Ezell of Orange Beach and Jessica L. Elmore of Mobile.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The University of Alabama in Huntsville presented undergraduate and graduate degrees during spring commencement on May 11 in the Von Braun Center Arena.

Ann Louise Ledford, of Daphne, was among the recipients of an undisclosed degree.  

ATLANTA, Ga. — The following received a degree from Emory University at its 163rd commencement ceremony on May 12.

— Alexandra Marquez of Daphne, daughter of Philip Paul Marquez and Susan Milus Marquez, received a Bachelor of Arts from Emory College.

— Stephanie Williams of Daphne, daughter of Roy Williams and Ruth Williams, received a Bachelor of Arts from Emory College.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A total of 128 students in Huntingdon College’s traditional day program completed their Bachelor of Arts degrees and graduated as members of the class of 2008.

Joseph Paul Patterson, whose major was communication studies, earned his degree during the ceremony.           

Founded in 1854, Huntingdon is a coeducational liberal arts college. The college’s motto is, “Enter to grow in wisdom; go forth to apply wisdom in service.”

Judson College held summer commencement on June 28. The following local students were among the graduates.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Many area residents were named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law. They include, by town:

•William Edward Scully III, Daphne

•Stephanie J. Whatley, Gulf Shores

•Jessica Lora Jones, Spanish Fort

To qualify for the honor, a law student must have earned a minimum 3.0 grade point average out of a possible 4.0 while attempting at least 10 credit hours of coursework.

ALBANY, New York — Ulysses John Gonzalez, a Daphne resident, has earned a Bachelor of Science from Excelsior College.

Excelsior College is a private, nonprofit institution founded in 1971 and located in Albany, N.Y.

The last group of National Merit Scholar designees to be announced in 2008 by National Merit Scholarship Corporation includes a Daphne student.

Charles M. Hoequist, an Alabama School of Mathematics and Science graduate, with a probable career field in physics, earned the National Merit Scholarship for the University of Florida.

About 8,300 students were named National Merit Scholars this year. These distinguished high school graduates will receive scholarships for undergraduate study worth a total of approximately $36 million.

In addition to college-sponsored awards, two other types of National Merit Scholarships were offered: 2,500 National Merit $2500 scholarships for which all finalists competed, and about 1,100 corporate-sponsored scholarship awards for finalists who met criteria specified by their grantor organizations.

BIRMINGHAM — Several  area residents have been inducted into the Samford University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta honor society for freshman students. They are, by town:

—Fairhope: Shrina D. Amin and Malynda M. Mesler

—Foley: Randall R. Harden

—Gulf Shores: Mary Katherine Holder

—Saraland: Candace L. Wilson

Membership in Alpha Lambda Delta is open to full-time freshman students who earn a minimum 3.5 grade point average during their first semester of study and rank in the top 20 percent of their class.

ATLANTA, Ga. — Alexandra Marquez of Daphne, daughter of Philip Paul Marquez and Susan Milus Marquez, was named to the dean’s list of Emory College, the undergraduate, liberal arts college of Emory University in Atlanta, for the spring semester.

Students must be in the top 20 percent of Emory College or have approximately a 3.859 grade point average or higher to be named to the list.

MONROE, La. — University of Louisiana at Monroe President Dr. James E. Cofer Sr. has announced the ULM spring semester president’s list and honor roll.

Ashley E. Stephens, of Daphne, is included on the list.

Students who obtain the honor must be registered full time and maintain a 3.9 to 4.0 grade point average on a 4.0 system.

To be on the honor roll, a student must be registered full time and maintain a 3.5 or 3.899 grade point average.
