Day of Peace observance planned for Fairhope

The International Day of Peace, supported worldwide by more than 2,000 organizations in 190 nations, will be observed in Fairhope on Friday, Sept. 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the town park just south of the pier. Fairhope sponsors are the Fairhope Society of Friends and the Fairhope Unitarian Fellowship.

This is the date designated by the U.N. General Assembly as a day of cease-fire, non-violence and peace-building. The scope of this event is outlined on the International Day of Peace Web site.

In Fairhope, the first hour of the vigil will be devoted to relevant readings or poems by volunteers from the audience. The second hour will include lighting of candles and Quaker-style silent meditation, providing time from a busy world to think deeply about our world as community, what we envision for it, and what we can do to fulfill that vision.

Steve Lyrene of Fairhope Friends will open the meeting with a few remarks, followed by group participation. Attendees are asked to bring chairs or blankets, readings, a candle for each family member, umbrellas in case of rain.
