AUBURN, Ala. – No doubt you’ve heard the saying “defense wins championships.” Never was that old adage more true than in the state championship wins for Daphne and Spanish Fort last week.
The Trojans and the Toros held two powerful Birmingham area offenses to a combined 6 points in the Super 6. Daphne held Hoover’s potent Buc offense to just 6 points, 29 points off their average of 35 per game.
The 6 point total was the lowest for Hoover since a 13-3 loss to J.O. Johnson in 1997.
“We never expected to hold them to only six points,” 6A championship game MVP Michael Pierce said.
Spanish Fort busted up Briarwood’s high-scoring attack, shutting the Lions out for the first time since the 2005 season. Briarwood had averaged more than 30 points per game in 2010.
The Toros did it by captializing on one of Briarwood’s weaknesses. The Lions had lost 17 fumbles in 2010, and the Toros forced five turnovers, including three fumbles, to disrupt the Briarwood offense. When Briarwood couldn’t run the ball, it went to the pass, and the Toros picked off two Ben Craft passes. Craft, who had thrown for 245 yards and three touchdowns in the semifinals against Hartselle, was held to just 103 yards and the two interceptions on Thursday.
