Effie Arnet Bishop Delchamps, 84, a native of Gulfport, Miss., and a longtime resident of Fairhope, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008.
Although she received many awards and honors throughout her life, she measured her greatest treasures to be her faith and her family. She believed she was called to the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19, “Go ye therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Julia Bishop, and son-in-law, Wayne Bobbitt.
Survivors include her deeply loving husband of 64 years, Newton E. Delchamps of Fairhope; two daughters, Linda Bobbitt of Columbus, Miss., and Charlotte (William) Laughlin of Daphne; dear sister, Betty Savage of Fairhope; five grandchildren, which share her love of Christ and her gift for creative writing, Dex (Charla) Bobbitt of Chattanooga, Tenn., Brian (Rebecca) Laughlin of Mobile, Brittain (Charles) Wharton of Madison, Miss., Leigh Ann (Dan) Crawford of Kissimmee, Fla., and David (Mary Faith) Laughlin of Newnan, Ga.; 10 great-grandchildren, Christopher, Daniel and Katelyn Laughlin of Mobile, Julia, Charlotte and William Crawford of Kissimmee, Fla., Leslie Wharton of Columbus, Miss., Taylor, William and Charles Wharton of Madison, Miss., Andrew and Lydia Jane Laughlin of Newnan, Ga.; two nieces, Cynthia (Tim) Pace of Amory, Miss., and Elizabeth Savage of Jackson, Miss.; nephew John (Kim) Savage III of Las Vegas; grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Fairhope. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5 from the chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Fairhope. Interment will follow at Jubilee Memorial Gardens, Daphne.
