Delta Woods and Waters Expo attracting naturalist authors

SPANISH FORT, Ala. — When organizers of Spanish Fort’s third annual Delta Woods and Waters Expo say they have a little something for everyone, they go so far as to spell it out.

Avid readers will have their picks of literary gems and personal meet-and-greets with authors during the environmental extravaganza’s April 30 Family Day at 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center.

Monica Davis, the expo’s spokeswoman, said the center’s Cypress Gift Shop will provide ample options for patrons for whom the natural world comes as much alive through prose and illustrations as it does a nature hike or fishing trip.

“It’s part of the expanded offerings this year, and response has been strong so far,” Davis said.

Specifically, the Spanish Fort-based authors of the “Boat House Buddies” series will be available to sign copies of their children’s series as will Fairhope author Angela Erwin, who penned “Jumpin’ Jubilee.”

The 10-book “Boat House Buddies Deal with the Big Spill” was a collaboration by authors Karen Thomason and Ilene Baskette, editors Melanie Houseknecht and Elva Simpson and illustrator Cindy Allen. The series is dedicated to the 11 families who lost loved ones to the April 20, 2010 explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that spawned a four-month oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and altered forever Alabama’s coastal way of life.

Meanwhile, Erwin’s “Jumpin Jubilee” explains for children the complex turn of natural events responsible for a natural phenomenon when sea creatures beach themselves that takes place on the Eastern Shore and only one other site in the world.

In addition, the gift shop will have copies of featured presenter John C. Hall’s “Headwaters: A Journey on Alabama Rivers” available for purchase as well as signed copies of naturalist photographer Fonataine Radcliff Howard’s “Spirit of the South.”

In her review of the latter, Lucy “LuLu” Buffett wrote: “In these stunning images of the flora and fauna inhabiting the southeastern quadrant of this glorious country along the 31st parallel north, Fontaine has captured those magical moments in nature, of absolute life-force, that inspire the emotional fabric of our distinct Southern flavor and passionate devotion to our life, our land, and our sea. By seeing with her heart, Fontaine has given us all an incredible gift of beauty and healing … the opportunity to stop … and appreciate an intimate moment with Mother Nature.”

The expo was created in 2009 to expose area youth to the virtues of environmental consciousness and importance of marine safety, while simultaneously addressing the city’s long-range goal of creating a communitywide event that defines and unites its residents.

While the first two days of the annual event are reserved for area fourth-graders, Family Day traditionally offers an expanded slate of 25 activities and demonstrations, covering everything from small-boat handling and turkey calling to yarn spinning and marine safety.

Family Day is free and open to the public.
