The South Baldwin Democrats will meet Sunday (Sept. 16) at 3 p.m. at the Bay Forest Club House. A. J. Cooper, Democratic candidate for the state Senate, will speak and answer questions.
Cooper, a native of Mobile, is a lawyer in Fairhope. He is a founder of the Black Law Students Association, the National Conference of Black Mayors, and the Alabama Lawyers Association.
He’s a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the New York University Law School.. He worked as an aide to Sen. Robert F. Kennedy at his New York office and worked in the senator‘s campaign for president.
He returned to Mobile in 1970 and was elected to two terms as mayor of Prichard. He then served on the executive staff of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and then as a member of the staff of the House Ways and Means Committee.
Massey (Butch) Lambard, treasurer of the South Baldwin Democrats, will give a report on the status of the large jump in property appraisals. He will report on the meeting he attended in Montgomery where officials of the Alabama Department of Revenue, the Baldwin County Department of Revenue, the Baldwin County Commission, the Baldwin Board of Equalization and the Baldwin and the Baldwin County legislative delegation discussed the unprecedented property tax increases in Baldwin County..
Lambard, who served as an appraiser in Jefferson County in the mid 1970s, will explain mass property appraisal. The public is welcome.
