FOLEY, Alabama -- A Foley resident was arrested Monday amid accusations of passing counterfeit bills at a local gas station last week.
After being identified by Depot Chevron station employees, Joseph Daniel Hall, 27, was charged with first-degree possession of a forged instrument, according to Captain Stephen Arthur of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's Office investigators responded to a call from the gas station Jan. 15 after a store clerk became suspicious of several bills used for payment, according to a Sheriff's Office statement released Tuesday.
Officers found eight forged $5 bills with the same serial number, all printed on letterhead paper with no fibers or security thread. The forged money was "not a high quality reproduction," according to the statement. Partial printer lines were visible on six of the counterfeit bills.
A white male was captured on surveillance video passing the fake currency. Two store clerks identified the male as a frequent customer named "Joey." Officers traced Hall's address on George Younce Road in Foley from a license plate number from his truck provided by the store manager.
Warrants were issued for Hall's arrest after another person at the George Younce Road residence confirmed that a "Joey" did live there. Hall was taken into custody and transported to the Baldwin County Corrections Center a week later.
Hall later confessed to officers that he used the counterfeit bills, but did not print them, Arthur said. Hall was later released on a $10,000 bond, according to jail records.
