SUMMERDALE, Ala. — The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office found an alleged methamphetamine lab in Summerdale while looking for a reckless driving suspect.

Deputies were looking for Kevin Curry, on reckless driving and other motor vehicle charges. The investigation was begun by the BCSO patrol division and is now being followed up by the Baldwin County Drug Task Force.

According to a BCSO release, Deputies received information that Curry might possibly be hiding at 13610A County Road 28 in Summerdale. Upon their arrival, deputies smelled what they believed to be a working meth lab.

The manufacture of methamphetamine, which can be made from legal over-the-counter medications, often has a distinctive odor. According to an on-line encyclopedia, the manufacture of “meth” can give off “acetone or chloroform, iodine vapors, white phosphorus, anhydrous ammonia, hydrogen chloride/muriatic acid, hydrogen iodide, lithium/sodium metal, ether, or methamphetamine vapors.”

Deputies called for a warrant, according to the release.

When deputies raided the Summerdale location, a working meth lab was said to be found. According to the release, investigators arrested James Kevin Puckett for manufacturing a controlled substance (in the) 1st degree and possession of a controlled substance. A handgun was also located and he is possibly a convicted felon on parole. Puckett is said to be the father of Kevin Curry.

Also arrested was Jennifer Lea Bemis, 32, of Fairhope. She is charged with being in possession of a controlled substance and for “negotiating a worthless instrument.” Both Puckett and Bemis are in the Baldwin County Correctional Facility. Another woman, pregnant, was found at the scene but not charged at this time.

Curry was not found at the scene and at this writing, remains at large. If anyone has information on his whereabouts, contact the BCSO at (251) 937-0202.
