Deputy killed on hunting trip

Posted

Funeral services will be Friday for a Baldwin County Sheriff’s deputy who was killed by a train Sunday while hunting in Greene County.

Investigator Mike Malone, 33, a resident of Silverhill,  was sitting in a chair on the tracks and did not respond to the engineer’s repeated horn blasts, according to Greene County coroner Ronald Smith.

Malone was hunting with others and his father, Herb Malone, who has been with the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau for 13 years and serves as president and CEO.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is continuing an investigation. Smith said early Wednesday he has not received an autopsy report.

Malone began working at the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office in 2002, after leaving the Mobile Police Department, according to Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack. Malone worked in the criminal patrol division until 2008, when he was transferred to the criminal investigations division as an investigator, Mack said.

“Everyone here at the CVB is truly a family,” according to Mike Foster, vice president of marketing for the Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The whole CVB staff, and certainly the board, are just shocked and deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will be there to support the family any way we possibly can.”

Malone is survived by his wife, Amy, and other family members.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Haitian Relief Fund at the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 4002018, Des Moines, IA., 50340-2018, or by going to redcross.org.
