Despite oil crisis, Blues will fly over Pensacola Beach

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. — As forecast calls for clear water and clean beaches, the Blue Angels confirmed they plan to fly their annual beach air show over Pensacola Beach.

Blues spokesman Chief Petty Officer Kurt Anderson told the Pensacola News Journal the team does not plan to let oil from the Deepwater Horizon incident interfere with the show.

“As far as we’re concerned, weather permitting, it’s full speed ahead,” Anderson said. “We love the Pensacola Beach show. We love performing for our hometown, and the oil is not going to stop us.”

In a year when beach businesses have been hard hit by the impact from the Deepwater Horizon impact there is optimism the Pensacola Beach Air Show, which features the hometown Blue Angels and which caps a weekend that his historically one of the season’s best for business, will be an economic and psychological boost for the beach and the entire area.

“The Pensacola Beach Air Show is an event all of us, local residents and tourist alike, look forward to every summer,” said Ed Schroeder, head of the Pensacola Bay Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. “There is no question we have had some adverse impacts because of the oil spill. But forecasts are very encouraging that our water and beaches will be clear through (the) weekend and we hope everyone will come out, see the Blues and support our local businesses.”

The week kicked off with Blue Angels jets performing Circle & Arrival Wednesday morning.

The main event, the Pensacola Beach Air Show, kicks off at noon July 10, with the Blue Angels flying at 2 p.m.

Aircraft and teams participating in the Pensacola Beach Air Show include:

•Grumman Widgeon G-44 flown by Julian MacQueen

•Prometheus flown by Skip Stewart

•Team RV

•Red Star and the Dragon-Dragon Aviation

•Fat Albert, a C-130 Hercules

•The Blue Angels F/A-18 Hornets

Other weekend activities on the beach include the Sounds of Summer free concert series featuring The Blenders today and Sunday.
