DHS student, 17, dies in morning wreck

DAPHNE — A Daphne teenager was killed and three others were injured in a wreck Saturday morning in the Lake Forest subdivision, police Chief David Carpenter said Monday.

Jace Holmes, 17, lost control of a pickup truck at a curve on Ridgewood Drive at around 2:15 a.m. The truck “ran off the road and then flipped over on the side … which partially ejected the driver,” Carpenter said.

The vehicle landed close to Larosa Circle; no other motorists were involved, Carpenter said.

Holmes, who had been a rising senior at Daphne High School, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:17 a.m., Baldwin County coroner Jim Small said.

“The cause of death is blunt-force injury due to a motor vehicle accident,” Small said of an autopsy.

Three passengers in the car were taken to Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, where they were treated and released, Carpenter said.

Carpenter said he did not have identification for the passengers.

“I think there was one 18-year-old; the rest were under 18, including Jace,” he said.

“From what we can determine, none” were wearing a seatbelt, Carpenter said.

“We do believe speed was a factor; we’re not sure if alcohol was a factor at this time,” Carpenter said, adding that the police department is awaiting a toxicology report.

The accident is under investigation, he said.

“We do know that by him (Holmes) not wearing his seatbelt, that that probably contributed to his death,” Carpenter said.

Phone calls to the Holmes residence Monday were not returned by press time.

Holmes, a native of Mobile and resident of Daphne, was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mosey L. Sherum, Robert and Ethel P. Holmes.

Survivors include his parents, Diane and Rob Holmes of Daphne; brother Jerret L. Holmes; grandmother, Sadie W. Sherum of Daviston; Melinda (Terry) Scott of Dothan and April S. (Scott) Stewart of Wadley; and cousins Kaley and Megan Stewart, Ashton and Addison Scott.

Visitation was held Monday at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Daphne.

The funeral service was held Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Spanish Fort.

A fund is being established to develop awareness for seatbelt safety for all Daphne youth. Details will follow in a future edition of the Bulletin as they become available.
