Digital mammograms increase detection by 40%

GULF SHORES, Ala. — In one of the first large-scale studies of its kind, researchers have found that 3-D Digital Mammography (tomosynthesis) combined with conventional digital mammography detects 40 percent more invasive cancers – those that have the potential to spread outside the breast – than do exams utilizing only standard digital mammography.

Also, false positive results are reduced by 15 percent. These figures just published by the Radiology Society of North America are the result of a University of Oslo study involving 12,631 examinations during a 13-month period.

“This is a huge increase. In the past digital vs. old film screen did not show any increased detection, though it was implied. Now we have a comparison of standard digital vs. tomosynthesis with digital. This is the biggest increase in cancer detection since the inception of mammography,” Board Certified Radiologist Dr. Jason R. Williams said.

Dr. Williams is Founder of Precision Imaging, a diagnostic and interventional radiology practice located in Gulf Shores. Precision is the only imaging facility in the state of Alabama to offer 3-D Digital Mammography.

State-of-the-art technology, such as 3-D Digital Mammography, as well as lowest radiation dosage possible, constitute the benchmark elements of Precision Imaging’s focus. Precision began offering 3-D Digital Mammography in October of 2012.

All mammography patients receive standard digital as well as 3-D Mammography at no extra charge.

The Norwegian study also stated “We believe that many of the additional abnormal findings detected with mammography plus tomosynthesis in our study are the very types of cancers one would hope to detect early and treat.”

“Early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer,” Dr. Williams said, “and we offer the latest technology available to make the most informed diagnosis.”

Routine screening mammograms may be scheduled by calling 251-948-3420. Precision Imaging offers a full line of diagnostic and interventional radiology services. Their offices are in downtown Gulf Shores, Alabama at 1680 W. Second St.
