Shock, amazement, outrage, shame, and finally amusement were what I felt upon opening my copy of the Wednesday Fairhope Courier.
The reason? The headlines announcing the once in a lifetime, historic results of the 2008 national election. Prominence was accorded the Baldwin County results for the loser of the national campaign, while secondary, insignificant small print allowed that indeed the president-elect was Barak Obama.
Sen. John McCain’s concession speech with his tribute and pledge to the Democratic winner was magnificent and a model for all to follow. The newspaper’s minimal acknowledgment made me feel sad.
I have always been proud of the Southern traditions of courtesy and humility in triumph and graciousness in defeat. Where are they now?
