Disney featured in MSO concerts

It would no doubt be a daunting task to find a family in the Mobile Bay area that didn’t instantly recognize the tunes “When You Wish Upon a Star” or “The Circle of Life” from “The Lion King.”

Today (Sept. 22) at 8 p.m. and Sunday (Sept. 23) at 2:30 p.m. at the Saenger Theatre in Mobile, the Mobile Symphony Orchestra (MSO) will offer these families a unique opportunity to hear symphonic arrangements of their favorite Disney soundtracks and show tunes when the orchestra presents The Magical Music of Walt Disney, under guest conductor Brad Kelley, a renowned producer and composer of music for Walt Disney Studios.

“Brad is terrific. He has written and arranged Disney music scores for entertainment spectaculars, shows and theme park attractions and is also music director and conductor of “Disney on Classic,” the annual Disney Music symphonic tour of Japan with the famed Tokyo Philharmonic,” says Stephen Hedrick, executive director of the Mobile Symphony.

Adds Hedrick, who, prior to joining the orchestra, worked closely with Kelley as a Disney executive, “Brad knows the Disney style so well and weaves it seamlessly into everything he does. We are very fortunate that Brad has agreed to come here and conduct our Mobile Symphony Disney concert.”

Kelley, who travels around the world for clients ranging from Universal Studios, Paramount Parks, ESPN and Fox Television to McDonald’s and IBM, is equally excited about performing in Mobile.

“I have heard many wonderful things about the Mobile Symphony and the performing arts scene,” he reveals. “I look forward, too, to sharing a bit of my musical experience with some young music students while I am there. And, of course, it will be great to work once again with my friend and former collaborator Stephen Hedrick.”

The arrangements for the concerts’ program — which includes such classics as “Zip a dee doo dah”, “Heigh Ho” and “Someday My Prince Will Come” as well as medleys from “The Lion King,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” — were provided by Disney Music Publishing from the archives at Walt Disney Studios, explains Jonathan Heely, director of music publishing.

“We’re delighted to have this opportunity to share what is truly a treasure trove of extraordinary music with our Disney fans in Mobile,” says Heely. “The music will take you on a musical journey to the far off places where the stories, tales and myths of many cultures have originated.”

Accompanying the audience on that journey will be Disney artwork loaned from the studio especially for the performances. Images of Ariel, the little mermaid, Beauty from “Beauty and the Beast,” Aladdin, and other Disney stars will be projected on a scrim behind the orchestra.

Children will also have an opportunity to become better acquainted with stars from the orchestral family of instruments. Prior to the Sunday matinee performance, the MSO will present an Instrument Petting Zoo at 1:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Saenger Theatre. There, under the tutelage of members of the Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra, children of all ages will have a chance to coax a sound out of a variety of musical instruments.

“The Magical Music of Walt Disney will be a magical event — from the first note sounded at the Instrument Petting Zoo to the final chord of the performance,” says Hedrick. “Our hope, of course, is that these concerts will ignite a lifelong love of orchestral music in the hearts of our youngest listeners. Some many even discover a desire to become musicians themselves. As Walt Disney himself told us, ‘When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are. Anything your heart desires will come to you.’”
