DAPHNE, Ala.—Daphne Middle School is on lockdown after a female student reportedly told a school official that she saw a male student carrying a gun.

Authorities have questioned the student, his parents and friends.

“No gun was found on his person,” Baldwin County Public Schools communications director Terry Wilhite said.

“We don’t know for sure if there was a gun,” Daphne police Detective Scott Taylor said. “We’re interviewing anyone we believe had any knowledge at all.”

Parents and residents gathered on the edge of campus waiting for periodic updates from authorities.

Some asked if they could remove their child from the situation.

“Right now, there is no in-and-out,” Wilhite said at the scene.

He added that the school has a safety plan in place for situations such as this.

“Even when we have a rumor, we go into lockdown,” he said. “What lockdown means is that there’s no student movement.”

Taylor confirmed to the group of parents that no firearm was found anywhere on the campus.

“The kid is saying there is no gun,” Taylor said.
