Dollie Mae Bryars

Dollie Mae Bryars, born Aug. 5, 1926 to Thomas S. Bryars Sr. and Ernestine Carter Bryars in Latham, Ala., died Monday, Aug. 19, 2013 at Oakwood Nursing Home in Bay Minette.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Thomas S. Bryars Jr. and W. Carter Bryars.

She is survived by her sisters and brother, Ernestine “Teenie” Fleming of Monroeville, G.C. “Hardy” Bryars of Spanish Fort, Rebecca “Becky” Hayes of Clarksdale, Miss. and Virginia “Ginger” (Paul) Crigler of Birmingham; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She retired from Reichold Chemical Co. after 43 years of service. She served the city of Bay Minette as a councilwoman and became the first female mayor.

She also served the community on several boards and charities.

She was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Bay Minette.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at 1 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Stuart Clark and the Rev. Keith Cardwell officiating. Burial will follow at Latham Methodist Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, from 11:30 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service at First Presbyterian Church.

The family wishes to express its sincere thanks to Dollie’s caregivers at Oakwood and North Baldwin Infirmary.

Pallbearers will be Gordon C. Bryars, Thomas S. Bryars III, W. Carter Bryars Jr., Thomas P. Hayes, George T. Stephens and George T. Stephens Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Bay Minette Public Library, 205 W. Second St., Bay Minette, AL 36507, or to the charity of your choice.
