Dolphin senior Beviacqua signs with Sewanee

GULF SHORES – Bryan Beviacqua, who helped lead Gulf Shores to a school best season in basketball, signed with Sewanee on Friday.

Beviacqua averaged 13 points and seven assists for the Dolphins as a senior. He helped lead Gulf Shores to a school best 20-10 record and its first area title in school history. The Dolphins, who finished 4-21 the previous season, advanced to the 5A sub-regionals this season.

“Bryan is a very smart player on the court,” Gulf Shores head coach Dru Powell said. “He plays hard every time and was a tremendous part of leading our team to one of the best seasons in school history.”

Beviacqua said the Sewanee coaching staff is interested in his experience helping turn around a struggling program.

“They like what I can bring to the program because when I started here, we won three games my freshman and sophomore years and we've increased wins the last two years and this year we won 20, the best in school history,” Beviacua said. “They are trying to turn their program around, too.”

Beviacqua, who also plays football and soccer at Gulf Shores, said he also considered Ivy League schools, who were considering him for football. He won the Spirit of Auburn scholarship, but wanted to attend "a more academically prestigious school.”

Sewanee is a Division III school and competes in the SCAC against schools like Millsaps, Birmingham Southern and Austin College.
