GULF SHORES, Alabama — The Gulf Shores Dolphins opened Gulf Coast Classic 1 play with a 7-2 win over Clinton, Miss. on Tuesday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
Winning pitcher Jordan Odom (3-1) went the distance, striking out seven hitters with five hits and one earned run for the Dolphins, who improved to 7-6 overall.
"Jordan was able to throw all three of his pitches and he had command and hit his spots," Gulf Shores head coach Donnie Spohn said. "He's a guy who we know when goes out there we have a chance to win."
The Dolphins scored six runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Brandon Davis went 3-for-4 with a run, Michael Strobel had a hit and three RBIs, Garrett Carter had a hit and two RBIs and Brooks Mason added one RBI for Gulf Shores.
"Our pitching was excellent and we played great defense tonight," Spohn said. "That's the key. We got some timely hits. (Clinton) helped us a little bit with mistakes, but they are a good ball club. We had some good at bats and pretty much played a complete game. I've been waiting for that."
The Dolphins continue play in the Gulf Coast Classic at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. against Hernando, Miss.
