GULF SHORES – The Leroy Bears visited the Gulf Shores Sports Complex Saturday afternoon to take on the Dolphins of Gulf Shores.

Earlier in the day, Leroy destroyed Davidson High School 11-0 in five innings, a team that beat Gulf Shores 6-4 in the early morning game.

Gulf Shores held the game close for several innings, but Leroy’s four singles, four doubles and a triple produced too many runs, and the Dolphins came up short, losing 5-1.

Leroy jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring a run in the top of the third inning, but the Dolphins bounced right back in the bottom, thanks to Kolby Spicer who singled and later scored on a wild throw.

Leroy answered with another run in the top of the fourth and the game remained 2-1 until the Bears let loose with a three run inning in the sixth.  Gulf Shores had its chances, leaving five runners stranded over the course of the game, but the pitching and defense of Leroy was too much for the Dolphins, who only managed five hits for the game.

Senior center fielder Bernard Nesbitt led the Dolphins, going 2-of-3 with two singles. Austin Carpenter, Collin Blankenship and Kolby Spicer also singled for Gulf Shores.

Earlier in the day, Gulf Shores let a 4-0 lead slip away in a morning game as Davidson came from behind for a seventh inning 6-4 win.

With no score after the first inning and with two outs, the Dolphins put together a four-run rally in the bottom of the second.  J.D. Swiger and  Braydon Bateman were both hit by pitches, and  Clayton Gates drew a walk, loading the bases. Lead off hitter Bernard Nesbitt then hit a two run shot to left.

A wild throw brought in Gates and moved Nesbitt to third, who then scored after wild pitch.

The Gulf Shores defense remained strong in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, but in the top of the sixth Davidson had a short rally of their own, scoring three runs and closing the gap to 4-3.

Gulf Shores left a base runner on in the bottom of the sixth, but was not able to put any more runs on the board.

In the final inning, Davidson scored three more, to take the lead 6-4, then held off the Dolphins in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 6-4 win. Davidson ended the day with nine hits to Gulf Shores’ six.

Collin Blankenship led Gulf Shores going 2-of-3 and was hit by a pitch. Nesbitt was 1-of-3 with a two RBI double and also drew a walk.
