GULF SHORES – Gulf Shores quarterback Logan Paul had four touchdown runs and three touchdown passes as the Dolphins set a school record for scoring in a 56-33 win over the Citronelle Wildcats at “The Mick” on Friday.
Paul, a senior, finished the night completing 23-of-31 for 303 yards and three touchdown passes and four scores on the ground. He scored six of those touchdowns in the first half.
“Logan is doing a great job running our offense,” Gulf Shores head coach Mark Freeman said. “I am really proud of him. He has improved his touchdown to interception ratio greatly since last season. He is doing a tremendous job.”
The Dolphins (4-2, 2-2) took a commanding 42-13 lead into halftime.
They scored on the game’s opening drive after a 71-yard, 11-play drive capped by a one-yard rushing touchdown from Paul. He completed 5-of-7 passes for 63 yards on the drive.
After stopping the Wildcats near midfield on fourth down, the Dolphins scored three plays later on a 35-yard scamper from Paul.
The Dolphins responded to a Citronelle touchdown drive by going 65 yards in four plays on their next possession. Paul carried four yards for the next Dolphin touchdown.
Paul finished the first quarter with eight completions for 132 yards and three rushing touchdowns.
The Dolphins stopped Citronelle on fourth-and-two with a sack from James Burton and got the ball back at the Wildcat 46 with just over eight minutes to play in the half. Four plays later Paul hit Brandon Gottfried on a 29-yard touchdown pass.
J.D. Swiger recovered a Citronelle fumble on the ensuing kickoff, giving Gulf Shores a short field at the Citronelle 20. Paul hit Chris Tilley for a 16-yard score two plays later.
Paul capped the first half scoring with a one-yard touchdown run with 37 seconds to go. He finished the half with 21 completions for 289 yards.
Hunter Harris had an interception and a sack to lead the Gulf Shores defense in the first half. Bryan Beviacqua made six extra points and ended the half with an interception.
After Dylan Searcy blocked a punt on Citronelle’s first possession of the second half, Paul and the Dolphin offense took over at the Wildcat 39 and went to work again. Gulf Shores scored six plays later on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Paul to Jonathan Adams.
“It was just a good night for us on offense,” Freeman said. “Our quarterback (Logan Paul) had a great night and our wide receivers were open and we ran the ball well. We felt like we had to keep scoring because Citronelle was going up and down the field on us, too.
“We came out and played with intensity, and that is just what we had to do against a good Citronelle team.”
James Burton added a one-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. He gained 60 yards on a rush three plays earlier.
Gulf Shores will host Escambia County on Friday.
