GULF SHORES, Alabama – The Gulf Shores Dolphins made 33-of-47 free throws and beat the Robertsdale Golden Bears 65-43 on Friday in The Tank at Gulf Shores High School.
The Dolphins led 14-6 after one period and took a 20-point lead after Robertsdale head coach Marshall Davis was ejected with 19.3 seconds left in the first half. Davis was called for two technicals after arguing a foul call against Robertsdale. Gulf Shores seniors Daniel LaBorde and Isaac Ronan hit 6-of-6 free throws after the ejection and the Dolphins took a 39-19 lead into the half.
LaBorde and Ronan made 23-of-28 free throws combined in the win, with Ronan hitting 16-of-20 and LaBorde hitting 7-of-8.
“Our free throw shooting was the difference in the game,” Gulf Shores head coach Clint Wigley said. “In the third quarter we did not play very well. But they kept digging and I challenged to finish the fourth well and they did. I was very proud of them.”
Ronan led the Dolphins with 19 points, LaBorde added 13 and Drew Murray had 10 points in the win.
The teams combined for five technical fouls in the fourth period and seven in the game.
“Robertsdale is a big rival and it got a little heated,” Wigley said. “It was probably one of the crazier games I’ve been a part of. I was real proud of how we executed when we had to. (Robertsdale) is a good team, they play really hard. I was very proud that we were able to match their intensity.”
Gulf Shores honored seniors Ronan, LaBorde, Murray, Nathan Taylor, Jeffry Ybarra, Michael Strobel and Richard Guyer in a Senior Night ceremony before the game. Gulf Shores Lady Dolphin senior Hannah Wilson and cheerleaders Abby Bruce, Cassidy Roberts, Haley Healen and Melissa Jackson were also honored as part of Senior Night.
Gulf Shores will host Foley in boys and girls basketball at noon and 1:30 p.m. today and will play in the 5A Area 2 tournament at BC Rain on Friday. Robertsdale will play in the Class 6A Area 3 tournament at Baldwin County High School this week.
