Donald Eugene Schmitz, 86, a native of Grand Bay and resident of Elberta, passed away Monday, Aug. 18, 2014.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 82nd Airborne Service. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Schmitz received a master’s degree at Vanderbilt in Nashville, and taught school in Alabama, Arizona, Texas and Florida.
He was a member of Gulf Shores United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 99 in Foley.
He is survived by his son, Donald Ray Schmitz; a daughter, Donna Sue (Jeff) Smith; granddaughters, Renee Schmitz, Chrissy Schmitz Fuller, Catherine Schmitz and Amanda Fuqua; numerous great-grandchildren; a longtime companion, Alice; and many other family and friends.
A funeral service will be held from the chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Foley on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014 at 11 a.m.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow at Pine Rest Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
