Donald Lee “Don” Newberry Sr. was born Sept. 8, 1933 and left this world Oct. 2, 2014 after a long, brave fight.

He was born and raised in Mobile, and attended Murphy High School, graduating in 1950.

He lived most of his life in Baldwin County in the Stapleton and Loxley areas.

After graduation from high school, he worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before joining the U.S. Air Force. He served four years of active duty and then an additional four years in the reserves.

After leaving the Air Force with an honorable discharge, he began his long career with IBM, staying there for about 35 years. He retired from there in the mid-1990s.

He was a member of Stapleton United Methodist Church for 35 years, serving as Sunday school superintendent for many of those years. In later years, he moved his membership to Loxley United Methodist Church, after moving to Loxley.

Don was also a member of the Gideons, and was very active in speaking and placing Bibles.

Don loved Jesus Christ, his family and friends and he will be deeply missed. He loved the outdoors and nature, word puzzles and spending time with his large family.

He is survived by Ruth, his wife of 55 years; three daughters, Kim (Ken) Sanderson of Loxley, Kelli (Robert) Parks of Huntsville and Kacey (Kent) Bradley of Daphne; two sons, Donald Lee (Barbara Jo) Newberry Jr. of Robertsdale and Darren (Lisa) Newberry of Decatur; nine grandchildren, Alaina, Katie and DJ of Decatur, Lee and Erin of Loxley, Emmy of Robertsdale, Makaela of Daphne, and Matthew and David of Huntsville; a brother, Roy (Jeanie) Newberry of Bayou La Batre; a brother-in-law, Boykin (Louise) Harper of Orange, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at 11 a.m., at Stapleton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jim Batchelor officiating.

Burial will follow at Bay Minette Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, from 10 a.m. until the service.
