FOLEY — National Doughnut Day, observed nationally on the first Friday of June, was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor The Salvation Army's "Doughnut Lassies," who served coffee and donuts to soldiers during World War l.
This year, the residents at Country Place Senior Living of Foley are rounding up the troops and holding a donation drive for the local Salvation Army from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on June 5.
The ‘Doughnut Lassies’ at Country Place Senior Living will be doling out free coffee and boxes of homemade doughnuts, made from the Salvation Army’s famous “Doughboy Doughnut” recipe, which includes a recipe card inside.
“Army workers served coffee and doughnuts to soldiers in the trenches during World War I. Rations were low and spirits were poor so doughnuts were passed out as a means of bringing cheer to the soldiers,” said Cecile Godfrey, Regional Manager – State of Alabama for Country Place Senior Living. “For many in our community, food and necessities are still in short supply. This donation drive is a way to help our community with emergency disasters, feeding the hungry and many other things. And who can’t smile while eating a yummy homemade doughnut?”
The Foley community is encouraged to stop by Country Place Senior Living of Foley on 615 East Laurel Ave. on June 5th during the hours of 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. to drop off donations and pick up freshly brewed coffee and homemade doughnuts.
High-Demand items include (please do not bring money or appliances):
At the end of the donation drive, donations will be sorted and delivered to the Salvation Army in Foley.
