Doris Evelyn Booker Pilgreen, born Aug. 1, 1918 in Selma, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011

She retired from the U.S. Coast Guard as a GS12, chief contracting officer for 3rd District in New Orleans. She was instrumental and deeply involved in the construction of several U.S. Coast Guard Stations along the Gulf Coast, from Texas to Florida. She moved back to her hometown of Selma to care for her parents and lived there until she moved to Gulf Shores to be near her niece, Dianne Dent.

Her main enjoyments in life were travel and playing bridge. She has travelled all over Europe, Asia and Australia, plus all 50 of the United States, most of the time with her dear friend, Dr. Gloria Borello of Savannah, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her father, Preston Stanley Booker; mother and step-father, Helen Day Booker Guyse and Oland M. Guyse; husband, Carl W. Pilgreen; and sister, Velma “Buddie” Prescott.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, Dianne Prescott (Palmer) Dent, John E. Pilgreen, Pat Pilgreen, Clarice Tracey and Jack Tomlin; many grand nieces and grand nephews.

Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28 at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Gulf Shores. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 1 at New Live Oak Cemetery in Selma.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice.
